Till recently a parent deciding on a school syllabus for their children in Kerala had three options to choose from ? the State syllabus, the ICSE or the CBSE. Now, the situation has changed, quietly but unmistakably.
The entry of an ?international syllabus?? the IGCSE syllabus offered by the Cambridge International Examinations ? into Kerala?s education scenario was relatively hoopla-free and free, also, of the usual controversies that dog the education sector. Over the past few years the IGCSE has established itself as a credible alternative to the three existing streams of learning.
The regulation of Kannur university now states that five passes at Cambridge IGCSE in Grade A, B, or C, and three/two passes at Cambridge International A Level would qualify a student to apply for undergraduate courses. (Cambridge International A Level is equivalent to 10+2 level of Indian education boards.)
The director of the Christ Nagar International School, Thiruvananthapuram, too said he wanted all universities to immediately recognise the IGCSE, A level syllabi. ?Such syllabi encourage students to have an international outlook,? he said adding that his school would soon introduce the International Baccalaureate (IB) syllabus too
