Some students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, along the outsiders took out a candle light rally at the gate of the institute last night to protest the action taken against them over their 'poor academic performance'.
According to IIT-Kanpur sources today, except few students of the institute, outsiders joined the protest. The mob included students, who were barred to appear in the next semester examination over their long absenteeism. Meanwhile, Dr Sanjeev Kakolkar, the registrar of the institute, said total 38 IITians were served notice and restricted to appear in the upcoming semester examination.
No student has, however, so far filed reason before the academic committee over their long absenteeism. Earlier, IIT Kanpur Director Sanjay Govind Dhande had said that the committee would decide about the students' appearance in the semester examination, if the would approach them. He had also ordered the 38 students to vacate the hostel.
