Tamil Nadu government today said admission to medical courses would be based on merit as done earlier and not by conducting Common Entrance Test.
State Health Department Principal Secretary V K Subburaj said the Centre had already issued a notice to the Medical Council of India (MCI) this January to withdraw the announcement on conducting CET for medical courses.
"As per the State Government's policy, in this academic year, students admission to MBBS courses will be based as per the marks obtained in the Higher Secondary examination and not by conducting Common Entrance Test", he said in an official press release.
He also recalled Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's appeal to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in August last year to reconsider the Centre's decision to introduce a single CET for admission to medical courses.
The Supreme court had on Monday directed the Centre to hold a single common entrance test on a plea by MCI seeking to start a single eligibility-cum-entrance exam for MBBS and post-graduate medical courses in the country.
