Kerala Education Minister M A Baby today noted that excessive apsiration to opt for professional courses in medicine and engineering was creating a precarious situation in the education system of the State.
Addressing a gathering at the inauguration of the 'Inter-University Centre for Nano Materials and Devices' and the State level inauguration of the Nobel Laureates programme under the 'Erudite' scheme of the State Government at CUSAT, Baby said with the prevalence of the self-financing colleges, the students were opting for professional courses in medicine and engineering at the expense of studying core subjects like science, humanities and finance.
'' This will lead to a precarious situation wherein there will not be brilliant teachers to man the teaching faculty of the Universities,'' he said.
This obsession of the society to pursue professional studies was trying to subvert the rationale of the higher education and this trend should be arrested, the Minister noted.
Enumerating the measures taken by the Government to attract students towards studying the core subjects, Baby said it had launched the choice-based course credit semester system and the 'inculcate' programme to usher in a new thinking in the education system.
The Government had initiated special programmes for social science, humanities, finance, music and science to identify talented youngsters at the school-level itself, Baby said.
Touching on the 'Inter-University Centre for Nano Materials and Devices', which was inaugurated by Nobel Laureate in Physics (2000) Zhores I Alferov, he said the Government had initiated steps to open six similar centres in various universities of the State.
The 'Erudite' porgramme was inaugurated by Nobel Laureate in Chemistry (2008) Roger Y Tsien.
