With just 13 days left for closing medical admissions, the Medical Council of India has not yet taken any decision on giving recognition to Sree Uthradam Thirunal (SUT) Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. Initially the MCI had refused to give recognition to SUT Medical College and Azeeziya Medical College, Kollam, citing lack of facilities. The two colleges later approached the Delhi High Court against this and the court ordered reinspection of the colleges by the MCI.
After the Delhi High Court order, an MCI team made a surprise visit of Azeeziya and was satisfied with the facilities and granted approval to the college. Almost two weeks after this was done, an MCI team is yet to visit the SUT Medical College to decide on its recognition.
The SUT officials on Friday said that they are still waiting for the inspection by the MCI. "The MCI conducts surprise visits so we have no clue about it. However, we have heard that the MCI may decide on SUT even without conducting an inspection. In the coming two-three days the MCI is going to hold a meeting and perhaps in this meeting a decision would be taken," an SUT official said.
Last week an MCI team came in the capital for the inspection of an upcoming medical college and SUT officials hoped for the same team to come to SUT for inspection, but this didn't materialise. They say that SUT has already rectified a few infrastructural issues pointed out by the MCI team in its last visit to the college.
When pointed out that the Supreme Court deadline of September 30 to close admissions is closeby, the SUT official said that if the MCI procedures extended beyond September 30, they will be forced to approach the Supreme Court for making admissions. "One can make admission with the permission of Supreme Court after this deadline, so the deadline won't become a big issue," he said.
