Overview
The Common Law Admission Test is a national-level admission examination conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities. CLAT has separate undergraduate and postgraduate papers. The postgraduate examination, officially referred to on the 2027 website as PG-CLAT 2027, is used primarily for admission to LL.M. programmes beginning in the 2027–28 academic year at participating National Law Universities.
PG-CLAT assesses a candidate’s ability to understand, analyse and apply legal principles contained in judgments, statutes and other primary legal materials. It is intended for law graduates and final-year LL.B. candidates who meet the officially prescribed eligibility conditions.
According to the Consortium’s published 2027 structure, the postgraduate paper is an offline, two-hour examination containing 120 multiple-choice questions. Each correct answer carries one mark, while 0.25 mark is deducted for every incorrect answer. Questions are passage-based and cover Constitutional Law and other mandatory subjects normally studied in an undergraduate law programme.
CLAT scores are used within the Consortium’s admission and counselling system. Candidates must separately review the admission brochure of every preferred NLU because programme availability, intake, reservation policies, domicile requirements, specialisations, fees and institutional eligibility conditions can differ. NRI and NRI-sponsored admission procedures may also require direct interaction with the relevant university. Foreign nationals are not eligible to appear for CLAT and generally need to follow the admission procedures prescribed directly by individual NLUs.

Eligibility
For appearing in PG-CLAT 2027, the central Consortium eligibility page specifies:
The candidate must have passed an LL.B. degree or an equivalent examination.
Minimum marks: 50% or an equivalent grade.
For SC, ST and PwD candidates: 45% or an equivalent grade.
Candidates appearing in the qualifying examination during 2027 may apply, but they must produce evidence of passing it at the time of admission.
There is no upper age limit.
Indian nationals and NRIs seeking postgraduate admission may appear.
Foreign nationals are not eligible to appear for CLAT and should consult individual NLUs about their direct-admission procedures.
Reservation documents must comply with the requirements of the relevant government and participating NLU.
Important: Individual NLU brochures may impose institution-specific admission requirements. Candidates should verify eligibility separately for every preferred university.

Candidates are given extracts from primary legal materials, including important judicial decisions, statutes or regulations. The accompanying questions assess reading comprehension, identification of legal issues and arguments, understanding of related legal principles, summarisation and application of legal knowledge.

Questions are based on passages drawn from legal judgments, statutes and regulations. Candidates are expected to comprehend the passage, identify the legal issues and viewpoints, connect them with relevant legal principles, summarise the material and apply their legal knowledge.
Application Process
Visit the official CLAT 2027 portal.
Register using the candidate’s personal mobile number and email address.
Validate the mobile number using the OTP sent by the portal.
Log in using the registered mobile number and password.
Select the PG programme and complete the application with accurate personal, academic, category and communication details.
Upload the required photograph, signature and applicable category, PwD or BPL certificates in the prescribed format.
Select examination-centre preferences and participating-NLU preferences where required by the portal.
Pay the applicable examination fee online.
Submit the completed application and retain the confirmation for reference.
The programme, category and BPL fields cannot be changed after the application has been submitted and paid. Candidates should follow the current portal instructions because document specifications and available fields may be updated.
