Pharmacy is the health profession that links the health sciences with the chemical sciences, and it is charged with ensuring the safe use of medication. Pharmacists, therefore, are experts on drug therapy and are concerned with production, quality control, testing and dispensing of drugs in hospitals and private pharmacies.Pharmacy education is regulated in India by two bodies - Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) up to the bachelor"s level and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). |
Courses & Eligibility
The different types of Pharmacy Courses and their eligibilities are as follows:
1. D Pharm (Diploma in Pharmacy)
Eligibility: 10 + 2 with PCB/M
Duration: 2 Years
2. B Pharm (Bachelor in Pharmacy)
Eligibility: 10 + 2 with PCB/M or D Pharm
Duration: 4 Years
Selection: Admission to B Pharm Course is either on the basis of merit or entrance exam conducted by the technical education board of each state. On completing the course, you must undergo practical training in a recognised hospital, pharmacy or dispensary. Graduates in pharmacy can opt to do postgraduate study in biotechnology, particularly if they aspire to become research scientists.
3. M Pharm (Masters in Pharmacy)
Eligibility: B Pharm
Duration: 2 Years.

Job Opportunities
Registered pharmacists can find jobs in health centres, hospitals and medical dispensing stores, in pharmaceutical industry, in the manufacturing, analytical and research and development divisions. They also work in drug control administration as Drug Inspector, Analytical Chemist, in the Customs office experts on drugs and pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Supplies and Rehabilitation as Assistant Director of Supplies, medical representatives and executives in pharmaceutical sale divisions.
Most large pharmaceutical firms have research divisions requiring skilled manpower. Fresh postgraduates and Ph Ds are recruited as analytical research scientists/associates or as product development research associates. The Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) , Lucknow, National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and The Indian Institute of Chemical Technology , Hyderabad also employs researchers. There is a demand for pharmacists in western countries also, and many Indians have fared well in this field abroad. |
